Chief Executive and Clerk to the Tribunal
We are seeking to appoint a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the staff and overall management of the VTW.
Our ideal candidate will be educated to at least graduate level (or equivalent), have knowledge and experience of local government taxation in Wales and/or England, have a track-record of managing both people and finance, and be a fluent Welsh speaker. However, the Tribunal welcomes applications from anyone who can justify why they are a credible candidate even when they do not fulfil every aspect of the ideal. The Tribunal is open to being persuaded by transferable skills and experience. It is up to you to make a good case.
Initially, the appointment will be for a two-year term, with the prospect of a renewed fixed-term or a permanent appointment thereafter. Our current CEO, Andrew Shipsides, was appointed in this way in 2013 and was made permanent at the end of the initial term. So it is open to you to make your mark and impress us if you anticipate having a longer career with us.
The projected starting date for the role will be as soon as can be agreed from 1 April 2023. Your workplace would either be our Newport office or your own home. Either way, you will be required to travel throughout Wales from time to time to attend different Tribunal events, to keep in regular face-to-face contact with staff and tribunal members, and to represent the Tribunal. If you currently reside in England, you would be expected to re-locate to Wales within the first 12 months of appointment (for which re-location expenses would be paid).

The closing date for applications is 6 January 2023.
We are seeking to appoint up to two Tribunal Clerks.
Our ideal candidate would be a graduate (preferably LLB), who has fluent Welsh language skills and has experience and qualifications in local revenues (council tax and/or business rates). However, we are open to all sorts of backgrounds - and lower level or no Welsh language skills will not debar you from consideration, provided you are willing to undertake Welsh language tuition. Above all, demonstrating a past ability to learn, as well as a current willingness to learn more, will be the key to a successful application.
Download the application pack below - and if you do decide to apply, make sure that you do so before Saturday 17 December 2022. Anything received that day or afterwards will not be considered.
